There are some things that should be in every body’s natural home medicine cupboard. Of course, we always recommend seeking the expertise of a health professional, such as a Naturopath, in order to determine which herbs or remedies are right for you and your particular constitution. It can be dangerous business self-medicating, even if the products are natural. At you next appointment, have a chat about using some of the following must-have products in your medicine cupboard at home:

ANDROGRAPHIS: This is a herb which has a potent effect on the immune system. It has shown an ability to reduce inflammation (heat) and fight viral infection. In one Chilean study, the herb had a significant drying effect on the nasal passages of cold sufferers who took  1,200 milligrams of andrographis extract daily for five days. A systematic review of several randomized controlled trials also suggested the herb alone may be an appropriate alternative treatment of acute upper respiratory tract infection. If you get a cold or flu, this is the first thing worth reaching for.

ECHINACEA: Most of us have heard the popular belief that echinacea stimulates the body’s immune system and wards off infections. A 2007 study by the University of Connecticut combined findings from 14 previously reported trials examining Echinacea and concluded that Echinacea can cut the chances of catching a cold by more than half, and shorten the duration of a cold by an average of 1.4 days. There are several different species of Echincea, just like many different parts of the plant are used – roots, leaves – in each differing product. Their chemical compositions are very different, which makes their quality very different as well. Echinacea is great to take as a preventative for colds (especially if you catch colds easily), and it is a great remedy to take if you are already sick.

PO CHAI: Po Chai Pills are a mixture of natural Chinese herbs. The complex is used as a remedy for the nearly instant relief of acid indigestion, heartburn, and gas bloating as well as a hangover prevention remedy. It is also used to provide relief from nausea caused by motion sickness, stomach flu and food poisoning. It often used to relieve vomiting and diarrhea. Take Po Chai Pills to relieve headaches related to intestinal discomfort and/or intoxication, bloating from overeating, stomach flu and diarrhea.

MYOPLEX: This is a complex used for muscle tension, pain, cramps or spasm. It also contains herbs to calm the nervous system and relieve nervous tension, stress and mild anxiety. This is great to take if you are having trouble switching your mind off and going to sleep.

Please Note: These are general guidelines and do not replace individual advice. Some herbs and supplements are conraindictaed in pregnancy, and some dosages may be too strong or too weak for certain individuals. Always talk to a Naturopath or other Health Professional before consumption.
